Runtz Grow Diary and Strain Review

Last updated: 3 June 2026

Grow diary hero

This diary follows my indoor run with Runtz from Barney’s Farm. I grew one plant and kept the setup fairly compact: a Mars Hydro 70x70x160cm (27.6x27.6x63in) tent, 19l (5gal) grow bags, and a Mars Hydro TS1000 LED rated at 150W.

The tent can technically hold more, but I don’t like working in a packed corner if I can avoid it. For this run, the goal was to give Runtz enough space, use LST to keep the canopy useful, and see what the plant could do without overcomplicating the room.

Starting the Run

Grow Notes

The grow started with a single Runtz seed. I was excited to get it going, but I tried not to turn the first days into a science project. Once the seed was ready, I moved it into the prepared setup and let the plant settle in.

I wasn’t planning to use a ScrOG here. In this box, I wanted to check whether careful LST and normal defoliation would be enough. My feeling was that a screen would add work without giving me much back, but I was ready to judge that by the plant rather than by theory.

Week 1

The first week was quiet. The young plant settled in without anything dramatic, and I mostly watched how it reacted to the light and the pot.

At this stage, I kept my hands off the plant. It was too early for real training, and I didn’t see any reason to rush it.

Week 2

During week 2, Runtz started looking much more confident. The stem stretched, side shoots got stronger, and the plant had already built 3 clear levels of growth.

The leaves looked bright green and fresh, with no signs of hunger or stress. The shape was also very even, which made me more comfortable about the coming LST work.

Veg Progress and Training

Veg Week 3-4

By week 3, the plant had gained enough size for training. I started LST with garden wire, fixing the main stem gently so the side branches would get more attention from the light.

Runtz reacted well. The leaves stayed a deep healthy green, and I didn’t see visible stress after bending. That was a good sign, because the plant was starting to shape into the low, open bush I wanted.

Over the next week, I kept adjusting the tie-downs and removed some leaves that were blocking light. The plant handled the defoliation cleanly, and the middle opened up without making the canopy look bare.

The Flip and Early Flower

Flower Week 1

I switched the room to 12/12 in week 5. The plant answered with a noticeable stretch, but the earlier LST helped keep it from turning into one tall central cola.

I kept working with the branches while they were still flexible. At this point, the job was mostly to keep the canopy readable and make sure the forming tops had space.

Flower Week 2

Week 6 was more about watching than correcting. The plant looked stable after the flip and didn’t show any obvious reaction from the earlier training.

I left the structure alone for the most part. Small corrections were enough, and I didn’t want to disturb the transition into flower.

Flower Week 3

By week 7, the plant was properly into the flowering phase. The stretch continued, but it stayed manageable inside the 70x70x160cm (27.6x27.6x63in) tent.

The side tops looked worth keeping, which made the LST feel like the right choice for this run. I still didn’t miss the ScrOG.

Flower Week 4

Bud development started looking convincing by week 8. Resin was beginning to show, and the plant was moving away from simple stretch into real flower building.

The canopy was still easy enough to work with. I removed only what blocked the buds too much and tried not to strip the plant for no reason.

Late Flower and Finish

Flower Week 5-6

Weeks 9-10 were steady. The buds kept gaining shape, and the resin coverage became easier to notice every time I opened the tent.

Runtz didn’t give me any serious trouble here. I mainly kept the routine stable and let the plant continue filling out at its own pace.

Flower Week 7

Week 11 still didn’t feel like the time to rush. The plant was maturing, but I wanted the flowers to get a bit more weight before calling it finished.

The buds looked good across the surface of the plant, and the main top was becoming more resinous. This grow wasn’t in a hurry, so I wasn’t either.

Flower Week 8

By week 12, the plant looked close to peak form. The buds had spread across the canopy, the side colas were denser, and the central top was pushing upward under a thick coat of resin and darkening pistils.

The aroma also changed. It became deeper and heavier, no longer just a hint of what was coming. Even with that mature look, I gave the plant a little more time instead of cutting early.

Flower Week 9 and Harvest

Week 13 became the final chapter of the run. The plant still looked lively, with green leaves and a stronger smell than before. That was enough for me to call harvest.

I cut the plant and hung it to dry. After the dry trim, the final result came to 83g (2.9oz) of dry flower.

Runtz Yield and Final Thoughts

The final dry yield was 83g (2.9oz). In a small tent under 150W, I was fine with that number. It didn’t feel like a record run, but it was a clean and manageable one.

The plant itself was easy to work with. LST was enough to shape it, and the defoliation didn’t cause visible stress. For my setup, skipping the ScrOG didn’t feel like a mistake.

Runtz left me with a good impression. It behaved predictably, filled the space without getting out of hand, and finished with dense, resinous buds. I’d run it again, especially in a similar compact box where training matters more than raw plant size.
