Tangerine Dream Grow Diary and Strain Review

Last updated: 26 May 2026

Grow diary hero

This was an outdoor run with Tangerine Dream from Barney’s Farm. I usually prefer growing outside when the season allows it, and this plant was one of several different genetics I placed in separate spots.

My main goal was to keep the plant compact. I knew even a 1m (3.3ft) bush could become inconvenient for me outdoors, so I planned on topping and LST instead of letting Tangerine Dream stretch however it wanted.

Starting the Run

Week 1-4

The first month was not exactly a smooth, sunny start. During the first 2 weeks, daytime temperatures sat around 18-23°C (64.4-73.4°F), while nights dropped to 13°C (55.4°F). The seedling also had to deal with gusty wind and rain while it was standing on the veranda.

That weather beat it up a bit, so I quickly made wire supports just to help it survive until planting time. By the end of the second week, the third node was finally starting to show, but not very confidently.

Week 3 was mostly recovery. The plant kept trying to build that third level, but cloudy weather made it stretch more than I wanted. That bothered me because my plan was a small, controllable bush, not a tall plant with a thin stem.

By week 4, the weather had improved. There were more sunny days, though it still wasn’t especially warm. The stem was long, but the leaves looked healthy, four proper levels had formed, and the fifth was starting to appear.

Week 5-8

During this stretch, the plant moved into a 25l (6.6gal) container and started looking more settled. It was still only about 25cm (9.8in), which was fine by me because height control was one of the main ideas of this grow.

I started topping and LST to make the plant wider instead of taller. Tangerine Dream handled the work well enough. On week 8, I did another topping, and it recovered without drama.

By then, I felt I was finally getting the shape under control. It wasn’t a huge plant, but the structure was becoming more useful, and that mattered more to me than raw height.

Veg Progress and Training

Week 9-11

Week 10 passed quietly. The plant kept adding green mass and got one feeding with Bio-Vega: 12ml (0.4fl oz) mixed into 3l (0.8gal) of settled water.

On week 11, I decided on another topping because the bush looked healthy and showed no stress. It took that one very well too, recovered, and kept filling out with new leaves.

The only thing still missing was sex. At this point, Tangerine Dream had not shown it yet, so I just kept shaping and waiting.

Week 12-13

By week 12, I started thinking it might be time to push the plant toward flowering. It had grown to about 40cm (15.7in) despite three toppings and constant LST. For an outdoor plant, that might sound small, but for my situation it was almost exactly what I wanted.

I even considered covering it with a dense dark cloth to imitate shorter days, but after thinking about it, I decided to give the plant a little more time.

On week 13, the first pistils appeared, so the feminized seed did its job. The plant started stretching hard, which meant preflower had begun. By the end of the week, it was already 60cm (23.6in), close to the height limit I had in mind.

That week was also the last Bio-Vega feeding. I gave it 3l (0.8gal) of water with 18ml (0.6fl oz) of fertilizer, then added sticks around the plant to help with control and support.

The Flip and Early Flower

Week 14-16

Flowering started to make sense in this part of the run. The plant had already shown sex, the stretch was active, and the structure I had been working on through veg finally started to matter.

The tops began turning into proper flower sites. I kept watching the height because the plant had already come close to the point where it could become awkward for me outside.

Week 18-20

By this stage, the weather was still manageable, and the plant was sitting around 25°C (77°F) when conditions were good. Flowering was clearly underway, and the small Tangie started making itself known by smell.

At first, I didn’t even understand where that aroma was coming from. Then I realized it was this little Tangerine Dream. Before drying, the smell had a noticeable nutty side, which surprised me a bit.

Late Flower and Finish

Week 21-23

The final stretch was mostly about letting the plant finish without pushing it too far. The buds were already formed, and the plant had done what I needed it to do: stay reasonably compact while still giving me a proper outdoor harvest.

I didn’t try to make the ending more complicated than it needed to be. Once the plant looked ready, I harvested and moved on to drying.

Tangerine Dream Yield and Final Thoughts

The final dry yield was 110g (3.9oz). For a plant I kept under control outdoors, I was satisfied with that result. It wasn’t a giant bush, but that was never the plan anyway.

After drying, the nutty smell faded and changed into something more fruity, with caramel and a light cheesy note in the background. That shift was one of the nicer surprises from the run.

The effect was bright and daytime-friendly for me. It felt pleasant and fresh, without making me sleepy or pushing me toward the couch. I’d put Tangerine Dream in the sativa-leaning daytime category, especially for growers who like an active high.

Looking back, the plant needed some patience early on because of the weather and the stretch. Still, it handled repeated topping well, worked with LST, and gave me the compact shape I was after.
