A common home approach is gentle heat at around 220°F (104°C) for roughly 30-40 minutes. Pinene with rosemary, pesto, or roasted vegetables feels much more at home than pinene fighting for survival inside vanilla frosting.
Just don’t turn this into terpene astrology.

Common Cannabis Cooking Mistakes
Most failed edibles aren’t ruined by some exotic chemistry problem. Usually, someone got impatient.

Poor mixing is another. Cannabutter needs to be properly incorporated into the food, not left hanging around in streaks like chocolate chips.

FAQ: The Questions Everyone Eventually Asks
How long do edibles take to kick in?
Usually somewhere around 30 minutes to 2 hours, although the full effect can arrive later.
The dangerous thought is “I don’t feel it yet.”
“Yet” is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
How do I calculate the dose?
The theoretical starting calculation is: flower weight in grams × THC percentage × 1,000 = theoretical milligrams of THC.
So 5g of flower at 20% THC theoretically contains 1,000mg THC before accounting for decarboxylation and extraction losses.
And those losses are exactly why homemade dosing remains an estimate rather than gospel.
After estimating the final amount, divide it by the number of servings – then treat the first serving conservatively.
Can I fry with infused oil?
Depending on the oil, technically yes.
Would I choose frying if flavor and predictable dosing were the priority? Probably not.
Low-to-medium heat or adding the oil near the end gives you fewer moving parts to worry about.
Why do my edibles taste so grassy?
Usually because too much plant matter made it into the final food.

There’s chemistry underneath it, sure. But there’s also the same stuff that matters in any decent kitchen: temperature, texture, timing, flavor, and knowing when to stop messing with the food.
Once you understand decarboxylation, choose a carrier that makes sense for the dish, and keep portions under control, the whole thing stops feeling mysterious.
And that’s probably the best way to think about modern cannabis cuisine.
Not as a competition to make the strongest brownie in human history.
Make something that tastes good. Know roughly what’s in it. Label it. Give it time.
