What Are Thai Sticks? An Overview Of One Of The Most Curious Ways To Smoke Weed
There are plenty of ways to smoke weed. You can put it in a pipe, bong or bubbler, roll it in a joint or blunt, light up the torch and do some dabs, or combine it with some butter or oil and put it in your favorite baked goods. Cannabis consumers worldwide all have their favorite consumption methods when it comes to lighting up their favorite strain, but perhaps none are quite as potent as smoking a Thai Stick. Intrigued? Stay tuned to learn more!
What Is A Thai Stick, Anyway?
While you might not have heard of Thai Sticks, they’re nothing new. They’ve been around forever (we’ll get into their history in a moment) and are really just an extremely old-school way of rolling a joint.
Thai Sticks combine various parts of the cannabis plant itself, making for a “joint” made completely out of weed. Buds are tied to a stick or skewer, cured, then wrapped in fan leaves from the cannabis plant. The result? An extremely potent, all-natural Thai Stick “blunt.”

A Brief History Of Thai Sticks
As their name might suggest, Thai Sticks originated in Thailand and are believed to have been around for centuries, around the time cannabis was introduced to Thailand.
Thai Sticks made their way to the West after the Vietnam War when they were smuggled over by returning soldiers. Because Thai Sticks were SO potent, it was assumed they were made with opium or immersed in hash oil to bind them together. Needless to say, Thai Sticks were more potent than the weed any American had ever smoked at the time.
When the Vietnam War ended and the crackdown on cannabis began in earnest in the US, Thai Sticks virtually disappeared. They’ve since made a big resurgence in the US and other countries, however, with their use becoming more widespread once again.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Thai Sticks?
While Thai Sticks might be one of the most potent pot smoking methods out there, they do come with a few drawbacks. One con of a Thai Stick blunt is their low efficiency, meaning you’re going to use a lot of weed to make them compared with how much that amount of weed would likely cost. Secondly, they can take up to a month or longer to cure, meaning you’ll have to wait to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Speaking of labor, there’s a lot of work that goes into them. However, smoking weed with a Thai Stick is a completely unique experience that’s worth all that labor and waiting! What you’ll get in return is a super stony, self-made creation that’s all cannabis… and an awesome traditional way to get really high. It’s also a great trick to learn if you want to blow your friends’ minds! Learning how to make a Thai Stick is relatively simple, despite all the work they take to create. Try it before it becomes mainstream!
How To Make A Thai Stick
Ready to learn how to roll a Thai Stick yourself? Here are some easy directions on how to roll a Thai Stick like a pro.
Things You Need:
- Buds of your favorite herb – if you want to go the traditional route, consider using a Thai strain
- Wooden skewer (think chopstick or shish kabob stick)
- Hash oil
- Hemp string
- Large cannabis fan leaves
- Parchment paper
Directions:
Step One: Pick The Buds
Go through your stash of your favorite strain and pick out the largest, fluffiest buds you can find. Fluffy buds work best because they’ll end up compressing together when the Thai Stick is rolled up.
Step Two: Begin To Cover The Stick With Buds
Coat your skewer with hash oil and begin to press the buds onto the stick. Make sure they’re uniformly covering the stick and the entire “bud stick” is uniform in size. You should be able to see both ends of the stick on either side.
Step Three: Secure Buds With A String
Wrap your buds tightly with hemp string, covering the entire length of the stick evenly. The hemp string should be tied at both ends.
Step Four: Refrigerate
Take your parchment paper and wrap up your Thai Stick. Place it in the refrigerator for 3-4 days, which begins the first of several curing processes.
Step Five: Wrap In Fan Leaves
Remove your Thai Stick from the refrigerator and very carefully remove the hemp string. The buds should all stay on the stick, not come off when the string is removed. Next, put more hash oil on the entire length of the bud stick and wrap your fan leaves carefully around it. Note that you’ll likely have to apply more hash oil for each fan leaf you add to your Thai Stick until it’s covered completely.
Step Six: Seal
Take another piece of parchment paper and wrap up your Thai Stick again. Put it in a hot pan or on a hot plate for about 5 seconds to ensure that the hash oil melts through every layer, creating a super strong seal on your stick.
Step Seven: Refrigerate Again
Remove the parchment paper, wrap hemp string around the stick again just like you did in step 3, and put it back in the refrigerator for another 3-4 days.
Step Eight: Finish Curing
Continue the curing process. Traditionally, Thai Sticks in the final curing stage were buried underground for about a month. You can go the traditional route by putting your Thai Stick in a plastic bag and burying it in the backyard for a month. You can also vacuum seal it and put it in the refrigerator for a week or so. If you don’t have a vacuum sealer, you can put it in a Ziploc bag and suck all the air out before you seal it up.
Step Nine: Use!
Remove your Thai Stick from its final curing spot, unwrap the hemp string, take out the skewer, and smoke up!
