For a habitual smoker, it could be a daily companion. The strain’s predecessor was the famous Skunk #1, which became practically synonymous with super potent indoor weed. It has a long history and is among the best varieties of ‘old-school’. Critical Mass is a reworked version of the classic, and has only gotten better with time. These seeds are regular and can be used as a basis for highly rewarding breeding projects.
Genetics
To keep all the desirable characteristics of the original genetics and enhance them, the breeder, the legendary Howard ‘Mr. Nice’ Marks, crossed it with an especially heavy phenotype of an Afghani Indica. The resulting hybrid turned out to be huge, resinous, and pungent-smelling. If anything could be better than the original Skunk #1, it’s definitely Critical Mass.

Expect the typical all-round ‘old-school’ buzz that engulfs your whole being, mind and body alike. The effects are easy to regulate by dosing (or your level of tolerance). This is where Critical Mass really shines. You can easily harvest as much as 750g/m2 (2.5oz/ft2) indoors, and outdoor yields are likewise impressive at up to 600g (1.3lb) per plant – plus, you don’t have to wait for them too long.

Plant a Critical Mass next to other varieties, and odds are that it will be the first one to finish. To flower it indoors, you’ll need as little as 45-55 days, while outdoors, fully mature buds can be harvested in September (March in the Southern hemisphere).
Grow Tips
This strain is famously beginner-friendly. However, its record-breaking yield potential can lead to problems with mold and bud rot, which must also be taken into account.
- Use defoliation to let air to every bud site.
- Constantly check buds for signs of mold.
- Never harvest too late, especially outdoors.
