This Dutch seed bank is among the oldest in the world, and their goal has always been to give the best possible experience to growers and smokers alike. Serious Seeds’ plants are notoriously potent: independent lab tests have confirmed that their varieties have the highest THC levels on the market, and these from samples that were grown by ordinary gardeners from seeds bought online. The seed bank’s story starts with Simon, a biology student from the Netherlands. Despite living in the marijuana capital of the world, Simon’s aversion to tobacco also prevented him from ever trying cannabis (Dutch people had a nasty habit of mixing this herb with tobacco). That all changed in 1986 during a trip to Africa, where Simon got a chance to smoke weed in its pure form for the first time. A rare stroke of luck – otherwise we’d have been robbed of a major breeding talent.

Simon got instantly hooked and spent the next several years collecting seeds, making friends with other cannabis enthusiasts and experimenting with crossbreeding. He dropped his high school biology teaching career to work first for Sensi Seeds, then to open his own seed bank, Serious Seeds, in 1995. A year before that, his two creations, AK-47 and Chronic, were awarded Cannabis Cups, and from then on, the wins just kept coming.

A Dazzling Array Of Trophies

At the time, ganja strains were often entered into competitions by Amsterdam’s coffee shops that had these buds on their menus. So, the very first year Serious Seeds company was founded, its Kali Mist (sometimes referred to as the Queen of Sativas) was presented by the Greenhouse coffee shop – and won. The next year, it was White Russian’s turn, presented by De Dampkring. All in all, Serious’ genetics has collected an astonishing number of trophies: no less than 100, including 25 cannabis cups. Often, the winning buds were grown from store-bought seeds bought by ordinary growers.
