Z By Original Sensible Seeds Grow Diary

Hey everyone, I finally got my hands on some Z seeds and kept careful notes of my experience. The current genetics in my garden are on their way out, so I’ve been trying new ones to find the best replacement strains.

I decided to try growing Z by Original Sensible Seeds because I love one of its parents: Cindy 99. I’ve grown Cindy for years, and I figured that growing Z would be a fairly similar experience. I’ve also heard that as a nearly true hybrid, Z provides a high that unites the best of both Indica and Sativa traits. I purchased two feminized Original Sensible Seeds’ Z seeds from Herbies and got to work.

VIEW STRAIN

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not the best grower in the world. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for particularly resilient strains. Z didn’t disappoint. It’s tough enough to stand up against any infection, from aphids to powdery mildew. That same stamina carries over to resisting changes in several other key areas, including nutrient mix and pH, humidity, and air temperature. Z's combination of these traits makes it an easy strain to grow.

Setting Up My Tent For Growing OSS Z

Just like all of my gardens, I used a 2 x 2.5 ft (0.6 x 0.76 m) tent to grow this strain. I live in an area without much of an outdoor grow season, so it’s the only choice I have. Tents are great for controlling environment and keeping your grow stealthily hidden. I grew this strain during the winter time, so the tent also helped me manage the temperature in my garden.

I germinated my plant in a rockwool cube before transplanting it into a 5-gallon (19-liter) pot filled with clay pellets. I like clay more than other hydroponic mediums like peat moss because it tends to dry out faster. When hydroponic mediums dry quickly, it means you can pump more nutrients into your root zone. I figured that a 5-gallon pot would be enough for Z to reach its full potential.

I used House & Garden nutrients to feed my plants. I had prior experience using it in my last grow, and I didn't want to change that with a new strain. When growing in a hydroponic media, it’s crucial to choose a high-quality nutrient line. Your medium won’t have any nutrients of its own, so your plant will be surviving solely on the minerals you feed it. This gives a grower greater control over what they’re putting in their plant.

As a general rule, I like to run efficient gardens. That’s why I always use LED grow lamps to power my plants. LED lamps use less power that other types of lights like high-pressure sodium (HPS) or metal halide (MH). Additionally, LED lights can usually generate both red and blue-spectrum light, whereas other types of lamps are only adept at a single spectrum. That makes LED lights great for use in both the veg and flowering phases.

Original Sensible Seeds’ Z – Week By Week Grow Report

This strain took a particularly long time to grow. It spent nearly 8 weeks in veg before I flipped it to flower. All in all, it took 17 weeks to fully mature.

Weeks 1-8: Z Vegetation Period

I vegged this plant for 2 months. That’s longer than any other strain I’ve grown, but I wanted to make sure my plant was strong before flipping it into flower. I started germinating my seed in a rockwool cube before transplanting it once it had successfully rooted.

I kept my grow lamps on for 20 hours every day during the veg cycle. While some growers are afraid to do this, I think it helps to supercharge the plants in a garden. The more light plants get, the more photosynthesis they can perform. That, in turn, leads to higher-yielding plants. Simple logic!

During veg, I kept my temperature and humidity quite high. My daytime temperature hovered around 73 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius), and my nighttime temperature fell to 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius). I kept my relative humidity hovering around 60% until dropping it to 50% in week 4.

Before I switched my plants into flowering mode, I did some work to them. During week 4, I topped them to maximize my number of colas. In week 8 (3 days before I flipped my plants into flower), I defoliated all the excess plant matter, including leafy branches and unnecessary fan leaves. This helped ensure that my plants had proper light penetration through their canopies.

Flower Cycle: Week 9-Harvest

At the beginning of week 9, I changed my grow lamp to emit 12 hours of light per day. Since this is a photoperiodic strain, that made it switch from veg into flower. I also killed the weaker of the two plants that sprouted to keep my genetics strong. By the time I flipped from veg to flower, my plant was nearly a foot (30 inches) tall.

I kept my environmental variables fairly constant throughout both veg and flower. The temperature in my garden stayed at a comfortable 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), and I kept my humidity at a steady 50% as well.

The Verdict

Although this plant definitely took its sweet time maturing, it was worth it. The quality of Z is undeniable. It has a fresh taste that combines base flavors like pepper and spices into a sweet, tasty take on citrus candy. It’s also fairly potent. Although it’s an Indica, I never felt too tired or couch-locked – it has a great combination of Sativa and Indica traits that make it a perfect all-day strain.

One area where I was disappointed was this strain’s yield. Usually, I try to aim for between 0.5 and 1 gram per light with LED lamps. However, I only pulled 2 oz (57g) from this harvest. However, I think if I dial in my feed and environment, I’ll be able to boost my yield considerably. I’ll definitely try to grow this strain again, if only to improve my yield.
