Behind Super Sativa Seed Club
The story starts in the mid-1980s, when cannabis breeding lived firmly underground and curiosity mattered more than scale. After moving from California, Sam the Skunkman handed over something priceless to Dutch grower Karel Schelfhout – the original Haze and Skunk#01. Those seeds weren’t just potent; they were a blueprint. Karel used them to begin what would become Super Sativa Seed Club, at a time when most growers were still figuring out how to keep plants alive indoors.
SSSC wasn’t alone in that early era. The only seed operation that predated it was The Seedbank, founded by Nevil Schoenmaker – the first to operate internationally. Nevil blended Sam’s original Haze seeds with Afghan landraces collected during strain hunts, creating a library of genetics that would become legendary. When Karel received seeds from both Sam and Nevil, the foundation of SSSC was set – Californian innovation meeting Afghan toughness, filtered through Dutch experimentation.
Between 1985 and 1987, SSSC genetics spread fast. A High Times cover story turned the seed bank into a global phenomenon almost overnight. Millions of seeds moved across the USA, Europe, and Asia, and for a brief moment, Super Sativa Seed Club sat at the centre of the cannabis universe. Then, just as quickly, it stopped. The founders went separate ways, and most of the original collection vanished into rumor.
The Genetics That Wouldn’t Die
There’s a Dutch saying: onkruid vergaat niet – weeds do not perish. In SSSC’s case, it proved true. Before everything dissolved, Karel saved one plant that mattered most: a daughter of the original Haze and Skunk#01. He kept her alive through cuttings for more than 30 years, quietly preserving her under the name Old School Haze.
That single plant became a living archive. Even now, many modern strains carrying Haze brightness or Skunk funk trace their lineage back to Super Sativa Seed Club. If it smells familiar, chances are SSSC had something to do with it.
Keeping the Legend Alive
In the 1990s, Karel shifted toward preservation and refinement, breeding for Amsterdam coffeeshops while also pushing indoor cultivation forward. He experimented with professional lighting, mineral nutrients, and rock wool – techniques borrowed from greenhouse agriculture that would later become industry standards.
The next chapter came with Kees, Karel’s son. A breeder himself, Kees discovered in 2015 that his father had been secretly maintaining Old School Haze all those years. Convinced the genetics were too important to disappear, he helped reintroduce their original flavour and effect to a new generation.
Today, SSSC once again offers authentic Old School Haze seeds, alongside other rare selections from the original collection. Fittingly, the seed bank now holds a place in the High Times Hall of Fame.
