Strawberry Cough Strain Info

Strawberry Cough is a Sativa-dominant hybrid that nonetheless retains some Indica characteristics, especially in its growth structure. It’s a great choice for socializing or for staying energized, and it has a proud history with origins linked to one of cannabis’ most famous personalities. The plants are visually appealing and have some unique features, such as attractive purple tones in the buds. Even after many years since their introduction, Strawberry Cough feminized seeds continue to be highly favored among experienced growers and smokers.

Genetics

The original Strawberry Cough is a product of long-time cannabis breeder, pioneer, and former High Times editor Kyle Kushman. Its origin is not entirely clear, but we know the strain includes both European and North American lineage. This variety was produced by crossing Strawberry Fields with a Haze strain. Strawberry Cough buds boast a unique fruity scent and sweet taste inherited from its mysterious Indica parent. Available today as a clone-only strain, it made its way to Dutch Passion, who recreated it in feminized seed form.

Flowering Time

The flowering period for Strawberry Cough spans about 9 to 10 weeks, and you might observe that your Strawberry Cough appears somewhat untidy a couple of weeks before you initiate the flowering process. Despite the fact that this plant grows densely and with many branches (it's recommended to trim it regularly in order to eliminate excessive foliage), you should refrain from pruning your plants within a few days of inducing flowering, ceasing pruning approximately 2 to 3 weeks into the flowering stage. We also advise growers to divide their pruning activities into multiple sessions, as undertaking all the pruning at once may cause the plant to experience shock and stress.

Yields

Strawberry Cough produces medium to large yield when grown indoors. Typically, most growers see a harvest of between 300 and 400 grams per square meter (0.98–1.31 oz/ft²). If you grow outdoors in a warm climate, you’ll get even more.

Effects

This strain’s effect is typical of a Sativa with its strong cerebral high – energetic, motivating, euphoric, talkative, and creative. It's highly potent and has strong effects on the mind, promoting clarity and sociability. The strain is particularly beneficial for engaging in tasks that require creativity or problem-solving skills. The uplifting effects of Strawberry Cough can be experienced for several hours, making it a great choice for a daytime pick-me-up or an enjoyable evening spent with loved ones. The smoke is harsh, often giving even the most experienced consumers watery eyes accompanied by a cough, but it’s also accompanied by a great high that lasts a long time.

THC Level

THC content for Strawberry Cough ranges from 15 to 22%, which is a high enough percentage that you’ll definitely feel the strong effects, but not so high of a level as to completely couch-lock you.

Medical Properties

Medical marijuana users report that Dutch Passion Strawberry Cough helps greatly with lowering anxiety levels, as well as dealing with stress and depression. The potential benefits of the strain's sociable effects may be valuable in the management of anxiety, particularly for individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Strawberry Cough's mood-enhancing properties may also assist in relieving symptoms of depression, as THC and CBD possess anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and anti-depressant effects when employed correctly.

Smell and Taste

Just as its name suggests, Strawberry Cough has a terpene profile that’s all about sweetness. Expect a soft and sweet strawberry flavor and aroma, with lots of fruitiness alongside hints of pepper and spices. The first thing that you'll taste is fresh strawberries. When exhaling, the sensation becomes sweeter with a subtle touch of spice. The smoke produced by this plant is fragrant and dense, often causing coughing, which is where the strain initially got its name from.

Grow Tips

Despite being Sativa-dominant, Strawberry Cough plants grow short and bushy, with strong and sturdy branches and stems. The flowering time for Strawberry Cough is 9 weeks when grown indoors, which is about average for cannabis plants.

This strain of marijuana gets covered with Indica-type buds that are big, long, and dense, resembling an inverted cone. This pot is quite resistant to most common pests and molds and does not need a hefty fertilizing schedule, so it’s a good choice for beginners. Other grow info and tips to remember:

  • The plant prefers warm, sunny, tropical climates outdoors, but does well in greenhouses or indoors too.
  • It doesn’t like strong nutrients – recommended doses are up to 1EC in vegetation and 1.3EC during flowering.
  • Due to its bushy stature, it’s well suited for SCRoG.

Strawberry Cough Feminized Seeds: Frequently Asked Questions

Are you fascinated by this incredible strain but still have some unanswered questions? Take a look at this section to have your doubts resolved!

Is Strawberry Cough Easy to Grow?

Those who have a preference for Sativa strains are aware that these plants with longer flowering periods may require more attention compared to Indica strains that finish quickly. Along with the extended growth cycle, certain Sativa strains may be more delicate in terms of nutrient sensitivity, which can make them a bit more challenging for novice growers. Nonetheless, experienced growers understand that the genetic qualities of these plants are well worth the additional effort and time for blooming. It should be noted that Strawberry Cough is not a good strain for cultivation outdoors in colder climates, as it can take approximately 9–10 weeks to harvest and is susceptible to mold and fungus during extended periods of unfavorable weather. While it should be feasible to grow this strain in a Mediterranean climate, for optimal results, we recommend indoor cultivation.

Where Did Strawberry Cough Come From?

The precise origin of this variety is unknown. Nonetheless, it is generally believed that Strawberry Cough is a hybrid strain with Sativa dominance that was created by breeding the powerful Haze and Strawberry Fields – an Indica strain with a frosty appearance that originated in northern New York and was cultivated alongside actual strawberry fields in order to disguise its smell.

Is Strawberry Cough an Indica or Sativa?

Strawberry Cough is a hybrid Sativa-dominant strain that was developed by Kyle Kushman and awarded the title of Best Flower in the 2013 Cannabis Cup. This variety was produced by combining Strawberry Fields with an unidentified Haze strain. With its composition consisting of 80% Sativa and 20% Indica genetics, Strawberry Cough exhibits substantial THC levels typically ranging from 20% to 25%.

What Type of High Does Strawberry Cough Give?

Strawberry Cough is a strain that combines Sativa and Indica traits, resulting in a high that is mentally stimulating and euphoric without being overwhelming. While your mind remains highly focused and filled with creative energy, your body will experience relaxation and the chance to unwind. Users often describe a talkative and sociable feeling after consuming Strawberry Cough.

Does Strawberry Cough Actually Make You Cough?

Yes, you will experience the sensation of expelling strawberries from your throat. Although some discomfort is unavoidable, it is swiftly countered by a potent burst of satisfaction. This is why Strawberry Cough remains highly sought after despite its prominent adverse effect of inducing coughing.

What Are the Side Effects of Strawberry Cough?

Some users mention negative effects such as dry eyes and dry mouth, as well as the sensation of getting somewhat anxious and paranoid.

What Terpenes Are Prominent in the Strawberry Cough Strain?

In the Strawberry Cough cannabis strain, myrcene is the most prevalent terpene, recognized for its musky, fruity, and earthy scent. It is followed by pinene, which has a fresh pine fragrance, and caryophyllene, which gives it a distinct peppery taste. When combined, these terpenes create a flavor and aroma reminiscent of freshly picked strawberries, with a smoke that has fruity notes and hints of herbs.

      Strawberry dessert. Nice high-effect
    • Disadvantages

    • General impressions

Really like it. Yeah, fist grow was a bummer, good thing I didn’t waste all the seeds, only germinated two and raised plants. Still a priceless experience. One of them died at the end, the other one lived but the result was just funny - 20 g. Bought a new pack and again grew two of them - one remaining from the first and one from the new pack. Same phenotype, similar bushes. Considered all of my mistakes and it worked out well
Taste is just wonderful. Can’t say the same about its smell. Effect is mostly sativa, tonic, enlightening, and slightly euphoric. But not long-lasting, THC apparently is not enough, doesn’t reach 15% it seems. Now growing the remaining seeds. Everything’s fine, they’ve already bloomed, will try to increase THC

Genetics, taste, stress resistance, medical properties. Can briefly describe it as a pain reliever
    • Disadvantages
For me there are none, but some can be bothered by a cough, which is mentioned in the name of the variety. A minute after smoking, there is a mechanical cough for a few seconds, such a side effect :)
Although when smoking, everything is soft and delicious
    • General impressions

For quite a long time I’ve been relieving migraines with cannabis, doing well without medicine. For me this is the best strain. Have been growing it once a year for more than 10 years already. Yields more than 300 g fresh, prefer harvesting earlier because of its taste. Whole cycle takes 14 weeks, 4 of them - veg. Indoor DWC 20 liters, LED 600+ w. Its potential is huge, can even get more than 500 g if kept for a couple of weeks longer and in a 30 liter pot, but will probably tear the tent apart. In box 100x100x200, one plant occupied the entire space with the central cola bent in flowering. Have one in a box. Likes 5.8-6.0 pH. Usually organics, sometimes add mineral during veg. Super genetics, more than 20 equally developed colas, 9-14 buds on each. It all depends on how well they're developed. Due to not enough space, I use only LST and defoliation. But do not get carried away - because of stress it can freeze for a week and thereby postpone the harvest
Feels like a smoothly increasing high, after 5-10 minutes stays the same for 1,5 hrs then down. You can start right in the morning. Due to the medical effect, there is a slight dullness, but in general it is okay for routine work. Mind remains clear. If you start in the morning, then after lunch smoke will only have a stone effect, almost no smiling, only peace. This variety is used in hospitals after chemo to awaken appetite and relieve pain
Initially it doesn’t state much THC, but you can take enough for it to get ‘much’. All the best!

This one of the tastiest cannabis strains you can grow. First couple of grows turned out to be rubbish, but I didn’t give up and considered all my mistakes and the final result was a success. Now will regularly add a couple of plants to the grow box. Outstanding antidepressant, anaesthetic and mood uplifter. Taste is pure strawberries and cream. But during flowering it’s rather smelly, and that smell is not strawberry

An asset for gourmet. Smells not so nicely tho. Smells isn’t even the word, it stinks of something rotten. And unexpectedly - such a clean strawberry cream taste.
To do no advertising here, will just say that it’s better to choose special balanced complexes and calcium-magnesium additives, pH-up & pH-down will also be of help. Good lamps, LED panels 150 w/plant at least. And there should be no issue. Temperature not lower than 21, not higher than 27-28 degrees, 65% humidity and then 50% during flowering. Responds well to bending, pinching and in general demonstrates resilience to stress and training
Interesting how it starts smelling terribly at week 2 and at flowering when there is a lot of resin already, the odor gets milder and less intense. Maybe I just got used to it at that point
Effect is mid potent, lifts up the mood, relieves stress. No euphoria, just a calm and pleasant feeling in mind and body. Relieves stomach pains and headaches. Triggers such an appetite that can just put a lock on the fridge at that point

      Taste, pleasant multi effect
    • Disadvantages
Won't let you relax during the whole grow, though the buds are sweeter at the end
    • General impressions

One of the tastiest varieties. Not for a newbie grower for sure, demanding. Sort of a challenge. Better start with one plant, unlikely the first run will be a success. And the second is okay already. First grow was with sodium lamps. Bushes stretched and overheated a lot. Although it’s sativa dominant, it dislikes overheating. Changed them to LED and made good for all of the strains. Grows well in coco btw
Once washed and cured, its taste is just strawberry and cheese. Earthy-sweet smell, not strawberry, more like skunk. Massive buds. Yields are decent enough, not worse than average indoor cannabis

Girls are okay, rather whimsical, but you just have to be prepared. Interesting grow at the same time, not boring, you take part and realize the results fully depend on you. There are phenotypes but only if you take a really close and attentive look. Develop at the same pace in general, and the effect is same more or less
Simply a miracle after curing. Recommend to anyone who’s not all thumbs and is not lazy to care for their plants

    • General impressions

First time I felt like a plant’s slave. Always this or that is bothering it: incorrect pH, too much fertiliser (organic), too little, stopped developing after basic bending, temperature rose up to 30 degrees, magnesium-calcium imbalance, etc. In general, not for beginners. Even for the experienced, which I consider myself to be having 3 years of successful growing experience, this experience might be exhausting

To be honest, although there were enough buds I didn’t expect them to be good. There was no strong odour mentioned in the description plus constant stress. Still unexpected strawberry flavour and explosive high-stone turned my mind upside down. Will I grow it again? Don’t know. Will take a rest from such adventures for now :)

The buds are dense and thick. Used a dry herb vape for the first smoke test. Fruity and spices aroma. Good head rush initially then plateaus after about 2 hours later. Immediate noticeable effect is a boost of energy and calmness. Creativity is improved and more social as well. No paranoia or anxiety.
    • Disadvantages
      None. Only dry mouth
    • General impressions

This was an enjoyable grow as it was my first time growing fully organic. Solid genetics. Not the typical lanky Sativa phenotype and quite easy to manage the canopy. But I still needed bamboo stakes to support the heavy buds. The smell during grow was only noticeable when I accidentally touched the buds. Mainly fruity. 4 plants after drying for 10 days came to a total of 531g. Quite pleased with yield.🙂

HUGE Frosty Buds. The buds that got closest to the grow lights ended up being the size of the business end of a baseball bat.
    • Disadvantages
The phenotype I grew was very unique. There's a huge amount of spacing between nodes so the plant grows really tall and mostly concentrated around the main stalk. Not much branching out which made finding a clone difficult so instead I just topped it by cutting the top 2 to 3 nodes off and used that cutting for the clone. If not properly pruned back this plant will grow to the size of a large tree!
    • General impressions

Unique plant to grow. Smells like a strawberry car air freshener in a race car (diesel smell). The buds can get gigantic and they were all super frosty. Even the bottom buds ended up being pretty big. Great bag appeal. This is my new daytime strain because for me it gives me a functional daytime high, so I can still get work done but not be all stressed and anxious about it!

    Hello Holden,

Thank you for sharing your experience with the strain with us. We are glad to hear that you liked its buds's qualities and they indeed look great on your photos! Regarding the phenotype's features you've mentioned, they may really seem rather unique and the actual plant can grow really large and high as this is a sativa-dominant strain. Your feedback will indeed be a great advice to anyone planning on trying this strain

Smell was fairly subtle throughout the grow and dry, and really comes across when you break the trichomes. I like it. A slight taste of berry sweetness comes through in the smoke. With an 11 day dry it smokes well, should cure nicely. Definitely feels like an all day kind of smoke, guessing THC is ~16% which is about what I wanted. I've smoked a few better, but also a lot that were worse.

Success! Pretty happy with the genetics, I was just not set up to grow them however. That and a few other mistakes along the way that cost me yield for sure, but still pulled more than enough perfectly smokable tasty buds, even with really heavy trimming.

Best smelling plant, fresh strawberry, as opposed to the lolly strawberry smell of the bubblegum type strains. Grew happily enough, I think the nutrients were a bit out of whack towards the end, affecting yield and flavor. Overall, like it though, and have crossed with some more indica leaning strains.

Strawberry cough (strawberry fields x haze) is the best tasting strain I have ever had ,and I am not joking or exaggerating when I say that. From the first inhalation I can taste the strawberry flavor that reminds me of the strawberry patches that grew at my childhood home. After the first hit the powerful high of haze kicks in and takes away any stress or anxiety I might be experiencing. The high is energetic and gets you moving not making you couch locked on the loveseat for hours.

If you only try ten varieties of cannabis, Strawberry Cough will have to be one of them. The effects are immediate, stoney, and soaring. Regardless of concentrate or flower, the ensuing high will last a solid hour or two before tapering into a subdued relaxtation inducing stone making it a great smoke for late afternoons and social evenings. While the usual toke lends good energy, I did find that in higher dosages strawberry cough's effects begins to lean towards the sedating side and in just the right situations can be wonderful for meditation and enducing dreamy, trace-like, states of consciousness.
