How To Make Weed Firecrackers

What's a Cannabis Firecracker?

A Potent Edible in under an Hour

Cannabis firecrackers have been around for decades—at least—with no clear origin. A firecracker is an edible made by baking peanut butter mixed with weed sandwiched in between two graham crackers. They’ve been a staple treat for stoners without access to pre-made edibles, and are made with a few simple ingredients that are usually already in your pantry. If you’re looking for an easy-to-make edible that is ready in less than an hour, it’s time to try out a weed firecrackers recipe.

Ingredients for Weed Firecrackers

Chances are, you could frankenstein together some treats just by rummaging through your cupboard. Weed firecrackers require only a few ingredients, leaving a lot of room for experimentation until you’ve got your own personal recipe. Here are the basics:

What's a Cannabis Firecracker?

  • Coarsely ground cannabis flower (anywhere from 0.5-2g per serving, depending on how potent you want them to be)
  • High-fat peanut butter
  • Graham crackers

Equipment

As far as tools go, you don’t need much, and it’s definitely already in the kitchen. To make a firecracker edible, you need some aluminum foil to wrap the edible in, a toothpick for stirring the weed, and a knife for spreading the peanut butter. Easy-peasy!

Step-By-Step Directions: Making Firecrackers With Cannabis

Now that you’ve tracked down all the supplies throughout your kitchen, it’s time to get started! Grab your stash, weigh out some nugs, and read on to learn how to make firecracker edibles.

Step 1: Decarb Your Weed

Making Firecrackers With Cannabis

First, decide how strong you want the edibles to be. Typical dosage for firecrackers ranges from half a gram to two grams per serving, depending on your tolerance. When in doubt, start with a smaller dose and move up later.

As with any edible, the flower needs to be decarboxylated before consumption in order to activate the cannabinoids. The process of decarboxylation is necessary to convert THC-A into THC, like when weed is burned in a joint. If you’re new to making your own edibles, check out our guide on how to decarb weed for more detailed instructions.

If you just need a recap: Preheat the oven to 250°F (120°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Coarsely grind your bud or break it up with your fingers. Bake it in the oven for 15 minutes, taking care not to overbake. At the end of decarbing, your weed should become golden-brown and pretty smelly.

Step 2: Set Up The Firecrackers

While the decarbed bud is cooling down, prep your firecrackers. Break a graham cracker in half and smear peanut butter on one side of each half. Sprinkle the decarbed weed onto the peanut butter of one half, and use the toothpick to mix the weed in and completely cover it with the peanut butter. Finally, sandwich together the two halves.

Note: a great thing about firecrackers is that they are so easy to customize! Peanut butter is the ingredient of choice simply because it’s high in fat and in almost every person’s kitchen. Other spreads with a high fat content can easily be subbed in if peanut butter is not your thing. We’ll give you some more ideas later!

Step 3: Bake The Weed Firecrackers

Bump the oven up to 300°F (150°C) and repeat Step 2 for as many firecrackers as you are making. Wrap each firecracker individually in aluminum foil. Once the oven has come up to temperature, pop the wrapped edibles into for 20 minutes.

Step 4: It’s Snack Time!

Once the timer goes off, take the firecrackers out of the oven. Let them cool for five to ten minutes, then dig in! Since you’re in control of the dosage, the firecrackers can be as potent as you like. Remember the dosage before reaching for that second one, no matter how tasty it looks.

Pro Tips For Fancier Firecrackers

With the essential knowledge of how to make a weed firecracker now under your belt, it’s time to kick it up a notch! Check out these tips on how to get the most out of this edible experience.

Experiment With Different Ingredients

With only the contents of your pantry and your imagination to limit you, why not go full stoner and make the firecrackers a bit fancy? Peanut butter can be replaced with any fatty spread, like other nut butters or hazelnut spreads. Graham crackers also come in a variety of flavors, like cinnamon-sugar and chocolate, but who’s stopping you from using another sweet biscuit cookie?

Get Bougie With Firecracker Toppings

As long as you have something fatty for the THC to bind to, like peanut butter or hazelnut spread, you can totally go wild with the other ingredients and toppings. Try drizzling honey or chocolate sauce over the top before eating, or make it a double-decker firecracker-s’more with a marshmallow and choc chip layer!

Reduce The Weedy Smell

Decarbing weed and baking edibles isn’t exactly discreet… because of the inevitable dankness that will fill your kitchen. If you’re concerned about the weedy smell (maybe because you live in an apartment building or somewhere cannabis isn’t legal) then there are a few things you can do to reduce the odor. Tuck a towel under the kitchen door, don’t leave the oven open for too long, and maybe light some incense for good measure!

Brush Your Teeth

Edibles can certainly be a more discreet way of consuming cannabis (no smoke!) but that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. Your firecracker weed breath could smell kinda dank for a good thirty minutes after nomming on the edibles. You are eating straight up weed, mixed into peanut butter or not, so expect some pot burps. If that’s a problem, brush your teeth post-consumption and maybe pop a piece of gum!

Prep Ahead Of Time

A great thing about edibles is how portable they are! You can scarf one down and no one will be the wiser, as opposed to the smoke signals given off by a joint. If you’ve got big plans, you can get ahead of the game and make some firecracker edibles the day before. These treats will keep for a couple of days after preparation if properly stored, meaning you can whip out a cannabis firecracker at the beach this weekend and really have some fun in the sun.
