how to make weed coffee a step-by-step recipe

Waking and baking has been a part of the cannabis culture for as long as we can remember. That’s why it’s only natural to want to combine your morning cuppa joe with your wake-and-bake ritual. Cannabis-infused coffee is about to make your day!

You’ve probably tried some edibles by now, but sometimes taking a dose of oil to the mouth is not the most flavorful experience. It’s time to shake things up and learn how to make weed coffee so you can combine your two favorite sunrise delights. Let’s start with the most crucial step.

Decarboxylation

decarboxylation

There are a few ways that you can easily infuse your coffee with cannabis. Some popular choices are cannabutter, tinctures, cannabis-infused milk, and cannabis sugar. For this recipe, we’re going to stick with cannabutter – it’s one of the easiest edible infusions to make at home.

The most important thing to understand about any edible is that you need to decarboxylate your weed before infusion. Decarboxylation is the process of heating up your weed in order to unlock the THCA that makes cannabis psychoactive. If you don’t decarb weed, you won’t feel any effects on consumption.

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cook time: 4 hours

Total time: 4.5 hours

Servings: 1+

Step 1: Combine water and butter

Place your saucepan on medium to high heat. Add a cup of water directly to the pan and bring to a boil. Melt in the butter and turn down to a simmer.

Step 2: Add your decarbed weed

Carefully stir your decarbed weed into the butter and water. Leave to simmer for 3-4 hours, making sure to top up the water in the pan if too much evaporates.

Step 3: Turn off heat and strain butter

Now that your butter is thoroughly infused, turn off the heat entirely and strain the butter through a cheesecloth into a container. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature.

Step 4: Once cooled, refrigerate

When your cannabutter is cooled to room temperature, place the container in the fridge until all the butter has separated from the water. It should form a green-tinted layer of solid butter.

Step 5: Remove the solid butter

Remove the solid butter and divide it into parts. A batch of cannabutter can only last a few days in the refrigerator, but it can last months in the freezer. So, divide it into the amount that you’ll use in the next few days and what you want to store for later.

Step 6: Prepare your coffee

Your cannabutter is ready! All that’s left is to brew your coffee. Boil enough water for however many cups you’ll be making. Pour your ground coffee into your plunger or filter and let the hot water work its magic.

Step 7: Infuse and enjoy!

Just before you add your milk, stir a dose of cannabutter into each cup. Add milk and sugar to taste, and you officially know how to make weed coffee!

How to Figure Out the Dosing

When you put cannabutter in coffee, you shouldn’t just guess how much to stir in unless you’re a high-tolerance thrill-seeker. However, even if you are, using measured doses will help you make the best of your cannabutter and ensure a great ride.

All you need to do to calculate your dose is consider the strength of the weed you used, how many grams you used, and the volume of butter you made. That way, you can work out the dose per teaspoon of cannabutter. You can simply input the values into an online calculator.

How Much Cannabis Coffee Can I Drink?

Start out with a single cup and what you’d consider an entry-level dose. Give it ample time to kick in and be patient. Resist the urge to have a second cup after an hour if all you got was a light buzz – this common mistake could soon leave you feeling like a newborn looking at the sun for the first time. Trust us, go slow and only retry the next day.

Alternative Options

The awesome news about cannabutter is that you can make it vegan. Just replace the butter in this recipe with coconut oil or MCT oil. You can also just add CBD or THC oil directly to your coffee instead of making cannabutter.

More great infusion options include cannabis-infused milk or cream and cannasugar. If you like the canna-coffee kick, have fun and try alternative ways to infuse.

What You Need to Know

You already know that you need to take it slow when consuming edibles. That goes for any edibles you enjoy. However, there’s an added element of surprise when learning how to make weed coffee – coffee and cannabis play twister with your body!

Just think about it: coffee is an upper, keeping you awake, while cannabis is generally a downer, making you relaxed and sleepy. Put the two together and what do you get?

The answer to that question will be different for everyone. Some might experience the high as more uplifting without affecting sleep quality, while others could experience possession by the Duracell battery bunny. Always be cautious, and try only a small dose out in the morning for good measure.

Can I Just Buy Cannabis Coffee?

The great news is that if you don’t have the energy to complete your own weed coffee recipe, there are plenty of stores that sell THC-infused coffee. Various brands are popping up all over the U.S., with many stocking headshops in various states. Do your research for what’s available in your state.

Wake and Bake

If you thought your wake-and-bake ritual was perfect, sipping your coffee while you light up a jay, it’s time for a change. Save yourself the trouble and get caffeinated the stoner way with this cannabis coffee recipe. Remember though, the quality of the bud you use means everything.
