Stoners are always finding new and creative ways to spice things up when it comes to smoking weed. Cannabis products come in seemingly limitless forms in this day and age, sometimes as updates to tried-and-true methods. The cannabis “upgrade” we’re talking about today is sun rocks – a way to smoke your bud that builds on the foundation created by moon rocks. And it’s out of this world!
What Are Sun Rocks?
Sun rocks are pretty new to the marijuana industry, slowly popping up over the last couple of years, although you may have heard of their predecessor, moon rocks. Simply put, sun rocks are basically new and improved moon rocks, with purer, strain-specific ingredients. To break it down, they are high-quality buds that have been soaked in BHO extract before being rolled in kief. The combination of quality bud and concentrated marijuana products makes for weed that packs a punch! Depending on your source and the ingredients used, sun rocks can vary in potency from 50% to 80% THC.

Sun Rocks Vs. Moon Rocks: What’s The Difference?
In order to be considered sun rocks instead of moon rocks, the strain used needs to be pure and used to make all the components: flowers, oil, and kief. OG Kush is the go-to strain for sun rocks. Moon rocks, on the other hand, have been out on the market for a while now. They’re easier to make since you don’t need to process the oil any further, can be used with a variety of strains, and typically clock in around 30-50% THC. Do Sun Rocks Hit Differently?
It’s clear that sun rocks are super potent, but what are the effects like? What sets them apart from good old-fashioned bud? Well, you can’t really compare them to either regular buds or concentrates alone; when smoking moon or sun rocks, you can expect a strong, long-lasting stone. The taste of the smoke is much more pleasant than hitting straight BHO oil, and sun rocks also burn long and slow, making them great for smoking out of a pipe or bong. You’re only going to need to take a few puffs before you get where you want to be, which makes sense considering how much THC is involved!
How To Make Sun Rocks
Okay, okay, that’s enough background info, right? Let’s get down to the arts and crafts! With this step-by-step tutorial, you can make yourself some sun rocks too! Pick out your ideal sun rocks strain and let us guide you through the steps. It’s pretty straightforward, so you’ll be a pro in no time.
Ingredients For Sun Rocks
There’s really only a few things you need to get started, but they’re extremely important. You want strain-specific, quality buds. OG Kush is usually what’s used to make sun rocks, but no one said you can’t switch up the star of the show!
- OG Kush buds
- Extra-filtered BHO extract, OG Kush
- OG Kush kief
- Metal spreading tool
- Parchment paper
Step 1: Make sure you’re using an extra-filtered BHO oil of the same strain as the bud you’re using to make your sun rocks. Using a metal spreading tool, coat the narrow, upper half of the bud in BHO oil. The layer of oil should be thick enough to totally cover the surface of the bud, but thin enough that you can still see through it. Don’t worry about getting the whole bud covered in one go – there’s no need to get the precious oil all over your fingers!
Step 2: Repeat for your other buds and set aside to harden. It’s a good idea to let them dry on some parchment paper, since the buds won’t stick to it too much. Once they’re shiny and dry, coat the other side of the bud, the wide base, in the BHO oil. While the oil is still fresh, dip the bud into the kief. Get in there, pack it on!
Step 3: Allow your sun rocks to dry for another hour or two before you break them open and start smoking. These are going to hit hard, so you probably shouldn’t have anything planned for after you light up.

How To Smoke Sun Rocks
Don’t you dare toss those sun rocks into the grinder! First of all, they’re going to be WAY too sticky for a regular grinder to be able to handle. The buds will get torn apart and you’ll lose potency in the grinding process. Instead, go old-school and break it up with your fingers or (gently!) use a pair of nail scissors. We recommend using a bong or pipe to smoke sun rocks. Remember that 50-80% potency? A little goes a long way, and you can even mix it up with your usual stash when you feel like smoking a particularly potent joint or blunt.
Do You Have The Lungs For Sun Rocks?
If you’re up for the challenge, sun rocks will deliver an experience that’s robust in both flavor and effects. Even Snoop Dogg, the king of stoners, says that moon rocks are “too much” for him.
